With AI booming, NJ is a growing data center hub. But what about electric, water use?

The AI boom is boosting demand for data centers, and they are cropping up across New Jersey, in both urban and suburban communities, joining the Garden State’s mix of warehouses and suburban residential development.

The data center company CoreSite, for instance, recently opened a 130,000-square-foot data center in Secaucus, larger than two football fields. CoreSite already had a data center in the town, to service finance and artificial intelligence.

Meanwhile, a $1.2 billion data center is coming to North Jersey at the former Merck corporate campus in Kenilworth, at an undisclosed date in the future. CoreWeave, a Livingston-based cloud computing giant, plans to convert the site, at 11 Nest Drive.

The site, which previously housed a lab and manufacturing building, is home to the Northeast Science & Technology Center, or NEST.
